I get asked this almost every week, usually the same way: should I just buy new? The honest answer depends less on the boat and more on how much time you’ve got and how much hands-on management you’re willing to do.

Start with timing, because it decides most of this anyway. Lead times on new builds from major European yards run 18 to 24 months from order to delivery — longer if you’re customizing anything. Want to be on the water this season? New construction isn’t on the table. You’re looking at pre-owned, full stop.
But pre-owned in this region carries different risks than buying in Europe or the US. Tropical heat and humidity age a boat faster, and not always in ways you can see on a walkthrough. I surveyed a boat in Langkawi two years back that looked immaculate — fresh paint, clean upholstery, spotless engine room. The moisture meter told a different story. Readings in the transom suggested early-stage osmosis. That’s the kind of thing that stays invisible until you’re three years into ownership and the gelcoat starts blistering from the inside out.
That’s the entire argument for an independent pre-purchase survey. Every time, no exceptions, regardless of how confident you feel about your own knowledge of boats. A proper survey on a 50-60 footer runs USD 2,000–4,000 depending on scope — sea trial, haul-out, moisture readings, full systems check. Compare that to what happened with a client last year: a raw water pump failed eight months in, took a heat exchanger down with it, and became an USD 11,000 repair. A survey would almost certainly have caught it before he signed anything.
Run the actual numbers before deciding the cheaper pre-owned boat is the better deal. A client was torn between two nearly identical 48-foot sedan cruisers. One was priced USD 50,000 lower but needed immediate engine work the survey flagged at roughly USD 45,000. Same total spend — just with extra downtime and stress folded in.
There’s a financing and warranty angle too. New builds typically come with a multi-year structural and systems warranty. That matters more than people expect if you’re not living near the boat full-time. Pre-owned boats can carry a transferable warranty if recent enough, but confirm it in writing. I’ve seen sellers imply coverage that had already expired with the original purchase.

Climate decides which problems show up. Boats in typhoon-exposed waters need closer attention to mooring lines and hull strikes from debris. Boats in busy straits and harbours show more electrolysis and wiring corrosion from constant humidity and heavy marine traffic. A surveyor who knows the region the boat has been based in catches things a generalist won’t. Worth asking about before you book one.
Neither path is wrong. A buyer willing to manage a refit list will do fine with the right pre-owned boat, especially with a solid survey behind the decision. A buyer wanting minimal surprises — and with patience for an 18-month wait — will probably be happier with new construction. What matters is being honest about which kind of owner you are, then building the budget and timeline around that.
